The route for the 3-day Pegasus has been designed to wow and challenge in equal parts. You will cover 60 km of scenic Alpine trails and tracks, with 3,000m elevation gain.
You will be bussed from the Highlander Hub (by The General, Mt Hotham) to Dinner Plain (15 min drive) at 6.15 am and from there you will begin your Highlander Adventure at 7.00am along the picturesque, undulating Brabralung Trail, passing wallabys, kangaroos and native birds along the way, then dropping into Big Spur and along Cobungra Ditch to Silver Brumby Hut and the first camp ground. You will be met by smiling faces, a warm fire and a cold drink (or two)
Day 2 will begin with a bush breakfast and Offgrid coffee or Tea before breaking camp and heading up over the Saddle and along the AAWT* to the summit of Mt Loch (1865m) don’t forget to take the time to enjoy the breathtaking sunrise views.
*Australian Alpine Walking Track
From there you begin the long descent past Red Robin Mine and down into the valley towards Blair’s Hut, where you will find the second campground, a beautiful creek to cool tired legs, a welcoming fire and live music to enjoy while you share the day’s adventures with fellow HIGHLANDERs.
Day 3 will begin with a creek crossing and an easy few kms to get the body moving before a change of gears as you turn up Diamantina Spur. No way to sugar coat it, this is a strenuous climb, particularly in the first section where the gradient is steep, and some rock scrambling is required over loose shale. It's often considered the most difficult ascent in the Victorian Alps, as it gains nearly 800 metres in elevation over its 4.5-kilometre length.
The view of Mt Feathertop as you crest the shoulder and join the Razorback track is breathtaking (not that you’ll have much left by then) and you will head south towards Mt Hotham. As a sidenote, ensure you have ample water before starting up Diamantina Spur as there will be no more water until you reach the end of Razorback Track 12.5km later.
After crossing the Great Alpine Road at Diamantina Hut there is just one more climb to the summit of Mt Hotham before the final descent into the village, finishing back at the General. Job done, you’re a HIGHLANDER!
Now all that is left is to celebrate your achievement, there will be beer, food and music at The General, Mt Hotham, where we will enjoy a few aprés trail drinks :)
