Don't be fooled HIGHLANDER is no walk in the park!

Temperatures from 8°C to 24°C

To be able to enjoy our trail, starting a conditioning regimen prior to the event is strongly advised. (We recommend 200 km of hiking in the months leading to the event). The gear you will be packing for HIGHLANDER must be tested beforehand for its full functionality.

Velebit is where continental and Mediterranean climates meet. Expect fog and cold in the morning and 22°C-weather during the day. Bring well-made and durable all-weather hiking clothing suitable for layering.

Note - The checklist for other formats differs from the one-day Lyra format.

BACKPACK

The backpack you will be carrying will likely be heavy. Practice with a 5-7 kg backpack and gradually increase to 15-17 kg. For Lyra format, we suggest a maximum of 10 kg.

Make sure you can walk comfortably in your backpacking shoes and break them in before the event.

Look into ultralight backpacking and thru-hiking methods of walking and packing. Bring only the indispensable items in your backpack and choose natural materials wherever possible.

Merino wool is great (especially for underwear) for its quick-drying, anti-fungal, and anti-odor properties.

A fully packed backpack, excluding food and water, should not weigh over 17 kg (10 kg for Lyra). The lighter, the better!

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW WHEN ON THE MOUNTAIN

Highlander travel informations

Weather

Expect dry and sunny weather with low humidity and colder nights.

Bring dry weather and rain clothing, including a cap or hat, gloves, cold-weather long-sleeve t-shirt (preferably wool), hiking pants, rain pants, and a rain jacket.

Food

For reheating food, you will need LPG or alcohol/gasoline.

Navigation

To find your way around, you must know how to read gpx maps and use a compass. For Hercules, Pegasus, and Orion a special physical map will be provided by the Organizer.

Walkie - Talkie

We know that lots of you hikers use walkie-talkies to talk to each other during the trail. For additional safety, all our checkpoints will have a PMR466 Motorola as well. We will have the public channel 3 (on PMR466 Motorola) so anyone who has any troubles can tune in and let us know what might be the problem.

This is in no way obligatory however, it does increase safety. If you don't have a walkie-talkie yet but would like to have one on HIGHLANDER Velebit.

Safety

On the trail and at checkpoints is our Medical Team, we are cooperating with Croatian Mountain Rescue Services (HGSS) BUT for your safety, all participants must bring a first aid kit.

Littering

We believe our participants love and cherish nature and all its beauty. We know you wouldn’t litter, so please bring a waste bag for your litter.

Littering on and around trails, checkpoints, and mountain lodges is forbidden. Litterers will be disqualified and banned from applying to any future HIGHLANDER events.

Dogs

Dogs are welcome but must always stay on a leash. See the Rules for more info.
