MANDATORY GEAR

All mandatory equipment will be checked at the start, before the start of the event.

Participants who are found to be short of equipment at the start and during the event will be disqualified and will not receive a HIGHLANDER Pin, Patch, and Certificate.

BACKPACKING GEAR LIST

  • Backpack big enough to carry your food, water, and personal items. Recommended with good shoulder and waist strap – size range between 20L to 30L.
  • Hiking boots: Recommended with ankle support. Hiking in sandals is not allowed
  • Hiking poles: Highly recommended as it will provide support carrying weight.
  • Compass or GPS devise or app to follow the trail
  • Sun protection like Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses etc.
  • Headlight + Backup batteries (in case you reach the finish after sunset)
  • Energy bars and snacks as per personal preference
  • 3L water bladder + 1L bottle or the sum of 4L (at least) in total
  • Personal first-aid kit (bandages, adhesive tape, adhesive bandages, stretch bandages, sterile gauze, antiseptic, repellent, pain relievers, survival blanket)
  • Head bandana or buff

APPAREL LIST

  • Hiking sports attire, dry fit clothing, and footwear that is suitable for this terrain and weather conditions.
  • Face towel + hygiene kit (for example mouthwash, hand sanitizer, wet wipes, etc.).
  • Hiking in jeans is not allowed

REGISTRATION INCLUDES

You can leave your additional luggage with us. Leave it at the Check-in and collect it after you finish. Please note that the Organizer is not responsible for any of your valuable items.
  • On duty UAE Mountain Rescue Service
  • Luggage storage in case you are an international traveler participating.
  • Lunch meal & hydration stations
  • HIGHLANDER ID – detailed itinerary showing all checkpoints (with dedicated checkpoint stamp spaces) 
  • HIGHLANDER Maps – detailed maps in waterproof cases 
  • HIGHLANDER Pin
  • HIGHLANDER Patch
  • HIGHLANDER Certificate
  • Infrastructure at the start, finish, checkpoints, and along the route

*More information regarding the exact location of participant parking and logistics will be shared close to even date with confirmed participants.

VIOLATION OF THE RULES

Participants will not receive the HIGHLANDER Pin, Patch, or Certificate in any of the stated circumstances.

Participants will be disqualified under the following circumstances:

  • Preventing staff from verifying that gear meets requirements
  • Missing required gear
  • Littering
  • Fire starting

FOOD

HIGHLANDER Ras Al Khaimah offers meat and vegetarian options.

The organizer will provide lunch meals for the trail along with nutritional supplements to be packed for use along the hike. Lunch provided will be according to the diet preference each participant chose during the registration process. All meals are distributed at the start during checkin.

The provided meal is suited to the average daily needs of an average adult. You can choose between a meat or vegetarian, the gluten-free option, however, is not available. You choose your diet preference during the registration process.

Participants supply their own snacks and extra food (as deemed necessary). We recommend bringing snacks, dry fruit, and similar food in addition to the meals provided by the Organizer.

There are no stores or supermarkets in Tawiyeen, so stock up ahead of time. :)

Detailed information will be given in a timely manner during Event Handbook briefings that will be held online with those who have completed their registration.

WATER

You must bring your own water to the Start (minimum 4L / 1 gallon).

There will be some checkpoints with water refill stations where participants can use water according to customary hiking practice. 
Natural Mountain water does not exist in these rocky terrains.

TIME LIMITS

HIGHLANDER is not a race but it does have a time limit.

All participants who collected all stamps and came to finish by the time of the finish closing, will receive their HIGHLANDER Pin, Patch and Certificate.

FIRE

Fires are prohibited along the trail. Should you want to make hot drinks along the trail, you can carry and use a gas canister and burner. Follow Leave No Trace Principles.

DOGS

At the moment dogs are not allowed on the HIGHLANDER events due to the challenging in terrain.

Not applicable for this event.

LITTERING AND WASTE

Garbage cans will be located at limited locations

Littering and polluting is strictly prohibited and will result in immediate disqualification.

Participants may use the toilets available at checkpoints, huts, hostels, etc.

Toilets are one of the key elements of your comfort, we understand! That's why toilets will be available at all main points as follows:

  • Availability of PUBLIC TOILETS at the STARTING POINT 

  • Availability of PUBLIC TOILETS at one view point
  • Availability of PORTABLE TOILETS at the FINISH POINT

It's important to understand that these are shared toilet spaces so each participant is responsible for keeping it clean and not causing a mess. 


Don't waste resources.

WITHDRAWING

Should any participant wish to drop out of the event, they will have to do so at designated checkpoints as described in the HIGHLANDER IDs.

The participant will bare any expense occurring from drop out such as transportation from the finish line back to the city.

Organizers will not be held liable for any expense for drop-out.
The HIGHLANDER ID will include contacts for transportation services as well.

Expect 2-3 hours before transportation is ready to pick you up.

The organizer is not responsible in any way for participants' withdrawal. Withdrawing participants will be responsible for making their own transportation arrangements.
